Let us briefly look at them together&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first stage of cameo making is the <strong>selection of the shell<\/strong>, then<strong>&#8216;bursting<\/strong>,&#8217; that is, cutting off the upper part, the &#8216;cup.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Next comes &#8216;<strong>scoring<\/strong>&#8216; and &#8216;<strong>shaping<\/strong>,&#8217; outlining the profiles of the cameos and removing superfluous parts.<\/p>\n<p>We then proceed to &#8216;<strong>aggarbatura<\/strong>,&#8217; which involves giving the piece the desired shape, oval or round, through the use of a special grinding wheel.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting pieces are fixed on a wooden spindle with hot mastic, composed of Greek pitch, wax and scagliola (hence the expression for this stage: &#8216;<strong>pitching<\/strong>&#8216;), and follows the operation of &#8216;<strong>peeling<\/strong>&#8216;: the outside of the shell is abraded to bring out the clear layer to be etched.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The engraver draws the subject<\/strong> to be reproduced <strong>on the surface<\/strong> and then, with special burins, engraves the shell until the perfect cameo sculpture is obtained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally, the cameo is polished<\/strong> with pumice and oil to smooth the surface and then <strong>washed<\/strong> with soap and water <strong>and dried<\/strong> with a white linen cloth-it is ready to be displayed in jewelers&#8217; windows.<\/p>\n<p>The jewelry in the photo is made by<strong>creative artisan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nicolinigioielli.it\/\">Sergio Nicolini<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cameos, artistic masterpieces created strictly by hand, require long and patient processing steps.
